Special Interest Group:
Creating UPA Local Chapters

Steve Macko, Cognos
Janice James, Simply Usable through Design
Martin Rantzer, Ericsson Radio Systems

Thursday, July 1, 1999, 5:15-6:30 pm

The goal of this SIG is to discuss how to create local chapters affiliated with the UPA. Joining a local chapter will provide access to nearby usability professionals and enthusiasts. Local chapters can publish newsletters, conduct monthly meetings and workshops, and host professionally-relevant events. They may create Web sites to post information about past and future meetings, member news, job postings, and upcoming conferences.

Issues to discuss regarding chapter formation include:

  • Purpose
  • Membership
  • Officers and their duties
  • Charter
  • Standing and temporary committees
  • Chapter bylaws
  • Membership dues/finances/disbursements
  • Meeting locations and schedules
  • Amendment and voting procedures
  • Dissolution of the chapter
  • Formal naming convention/logo for each chapter
  • Events/speakers/relevant topics
  • Networking with other chapters
  • Support/sponsorship responsibilities of the UPA
