Tutorial 2
Industry Standard Usability Tests

Nigel Bevan, Ian Curson
Serco Usability Services

June 29, 1999, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

This tutorial will explain how to test and report usability based on the Industry Standard Usability Test Report format. This format is currently being agreed between major software suppliers and purchasers in an initiative coordinated by NIST. The tutorial will highlight the differences between usability testing to obtain design feedback, and the more stringent requirements of usability testing to report usability measurements. Participants will learn how to use an established usability measurement methodology as a basis for producing reports. In addition, the benefits of measuring usability as part of a user-centered design process will be explained.

Nigel Bevan is manager of Serco Usability Services (previously NPL Usability Services). He was technical coordinator of a European Union project, which produced methods for usability measurement, and manager of projects, which set up a network of European Usability Support Centres. He has been an active contributor to the Industry Standard Usability Test Report scheme, and is an active participant in several international standards groups.

Ian Curson has provided consultancy and training to major commercial clients at Serco Usability Services. His background in programming and systems design enables him to empathize with developers and communicate user-based design principles effectively.
