Welcome to UPA Letter from the President Once again, I look out into my garden and see my crocuses pushing their way up from the soil and I know that I can start to look forward to the UPA annual conference. This year I am especially excited about the conference for many reasons, most especially this has been a difficult year, in many ways, and I find our annual conference a great place to connect and plan positive, exciting projects for the future. This last year has seen our industry, and ultimately the entire world, take an economic downturn-something we haven't experienced in many years. Many of us have lost our jobs, or even worse: know someone who has lost a friend or a loved one. The UPA conference should hopefully enable us to grow professionally and share common experiences while simultaneously reinforcing and reinvigorating us for the coming year. I have looked over the Advance program and see a wealth of interesting presentations and some wonderful additions to our conference such as the Advanced Topic Seminars. Additionally like last year we have managed to enhance the program with some wonderful invited speakers, and our usual high quality tutorials and workshops. I look forward to the conference to bring us together, to remember not only what our profession stands for- making technology better suited to serve people, I am encouraged because so many of us also look to help each other, to serve each other. I know many of you are working for companies with severe budget and travel restraints. I know that some of you do not have employment and that these factors may make it hard for you to travel to attend UPA. I hope to see you, if you can find a way make it to us.
