Student Volunteer Program

UPA encourages student attendance at our annual conference by offering a discounted registration fee for qualified participants, in return for conference service.

Who qualifies: The following individuals may qualify for the Student Volunteer Program, in order of precedence. You may be requested to submit evidence of your claimed status.

Category 1. Full time college or graduate students, including Spring '02 graduates

Category 2. Part time students enrolled in a degree or certificate program

Category 3. Under-employed individuals and others attending the conference at their own expense.

The total number of Student Volunteers needed for the conference is dependant on the total conference registration, but there will be at least 12 Student Volunteer slots to be filled. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to full time students over part-time students until June 15, 2002.

Benefits:

  • A registration rebate off the regular student fee will applied at the end of the conference after fulfilling service requirements. Your net fee will be $110 if you register early (through June 7) or $150 thereafter.
  • A distinctive UPA "Student Volunteer" T-shirt (to be worn while on duty)
  • For Category 1 (full time student) volunteers: Free attendance for any tutorials at which you're serving
  • Visible exposure to prospective employers and plenty of opportunity for networking

Responsibilities and attendance requirements: As a student volunteer, you will be expected to provide 15 hours of service during the five days of the conference in addition to assisting at tutorials. Typical jobs include staffing information stations, assisting at presentations and panels, and collecting tickets at various events. Assignments will be scheduled prior to the conference, but will be subject to change.

Student volunteers are required to be available for the entire conference, beginning on Monday morning (July 8) through Friday morning (July 12), unless prior approval is granted by a Student Volunteer Co-Chair. Student volunteer meetings will take place at various times during the conference, at which attendance is required.

How to register: If you are a full time student and you want to volunteer to work a tutorial please contact the student volunteer chair, Jeanine Williamson, as soon as possible with your preferences. We will make every effort to honor preferences, but volunteer slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You also have the option of attending and paying the student rate for the tutorials if you would prefer to fully take the tutorial. If you are working a tutorial, please do not register for the tutorial on the online or mail/fax registration (you will get charged for it).

You will need to register for the conference though using either the online or mail/fax method.

Travel & lodging: Unfortunately, UPA cannot provide travel or lodging subsidies to student volunteers. We encourage students to share rooms at the conference hotel, or at more affordable nearby alternatives. If you need assistance in finding a roommate, please contact the Student Volunteer chairs.
