Smart Mobs: Mobile Communication, Pervasive Computing, and Collective Action

Join Ginny Redish as she explores with us what makes a group into a community and the implications of a community focus for our work. In this talk, Ginny will look in depth at the role of communication within a community and between communities. With examples and stories, she will help us think about communicating with other communities using their language, helping team members learn and use the language of the communities we are developing for, and getting others to appreciate the language and techniques of the usability community.

Smart mobs emerge when communication and computing technologies amplify human talents for cooperation. The people who make up smart mobs cooperate in ways never before possible because they carry devices that possess both communication and computing capabilities. When they connect the tangible objects and places of our daily lives with the Internet, handheld communication media could mutate into wearable remote control devices for the physical world
