UPA 2006 Volunteer Opportunities
The UPA conferences are made possible through the efforts of people who care about promoting usability - and your contribution can help make UPA 2006 the leading forum for the exchange of ideas among usability practitioners. You can volunteer as an On-site Conference Volunteer or as a Reviewer.
On-site Conference Volunteers
On-site conference volunteers must be available throughout the entire conference, June 12-16, 2006, and contribute at least 15 hours of service during that time. The success of volunteers in the past is based on communication, so attendance is mandatory at volunteer meetings during the conference. Potential volunteer assignments include staffing the information booth, helping at the registration desk, or assisting session chairs and tutorial instructors. See the information below for Frequently Asked Questions about On-site Conference Volunteers.
- Do I qualify as an On-site Conference Volunteer?
- Volunteers are selected based on the following criteria (in order of acceptance):
- Full-time college or graduate students, including Spring 2006 graduates
- Part-time students enrolled in a degree or certificate program
- Under-employed individuals
- Individuals attending the conference at their own expense
- Why would I want to be an On-site Conference Volunteer?
-
- You get exposure to prospective employers and plenty of opportunity for networking
- Free attendance for tutorials at which you are serving
- A registration rebate off the regular student fee (applied after service is completed)
- You'll get a distinctive UPA Conference “Volunteer” shirt, which you also wear while on duty
- How much does it cost to be an On-site Conference Volunteer?
- You will initially be charged the student registration fee. Upon the completion of your conference duties, you will receive a refund check for part of it. Refund checks will be issued approximately 4-6 weeks after the conference.
- Does the UPA cover travel and lodging for On-site Conference Volunteers?
- Unfortunately, UPA cannot provide travel or lodging assistance to conference volunteers. We encourage you to share rooms at the conference hotel, and will help you find a roommate, if needed.
- How many On-site Conference Volunteers are needed?
- For the UPA 2006 conference, we will need at least 25 volunteers. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to full-time students. If the available volunteer opportunities have been filled, your name will be placed on the wait-list.
- How do I sign up to be an On-site Conference Volunteer?
- You can submit an online application through May 12, 2006.
